India is a country of beauty and diversity. It is known for its rich cultures and heritage. Its great food and even better architecture but one thing our country lacks in is proper sexual education. Studies conducted displayed that Only 55% of the girls considered menstruation as normal with their mothers being the only source of knowledge regarding menstruation.
The stigma and lack of communication is so high in households, that even the mothers are vague and ambiguous towards the girls regarding periods. Not only is there lack of knowledge but there is even a lack of awareness towards better alternatives to tackle periods. The sanitary napkin is not only expensive but even is not able to meet the global sustainable development goals.
Awareness and initiatives need to be conducted in schools to talk about issues like menstruation and sexual anatomy. From an early age girls are encouraged to use a cup for their menstrual cycle in India, then there wouldn’t be this fear around it. Ela cup , the cup for your period in India, aims to create a world where even girls of even the most remote areas has a sanitary product that is safe for their health and will not put them at risk.
It aims at educating and propagating an idea of sexual liberation, just like the western countries where parents don’t hesitate to teach to have the “birds and bees” talk with their children.
This education and awareness should not be limited to just to females but we need to even teach our boys about not only themselves but even about girls. Only then will the two sexes be able to see themselves in each others shoes and live in harmony and blissful peace.
